The Mexican (2001) is a feel-good film with ongoing suspense. It stars Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in a romantic adventure. Their contrasting personalities find a way to merge depth and humor into the storyline. The Mexican will even jolt the audience. The characters are as flamboyant as the actors are in real life. How else could the mob, an ancient gun, and national borders accompany the relationship of a couple in love?
Definitively classifying this film is a difficult task. Pitt portrays his usual reluctant character, and Roberts, as always, is the ultra-classical romantic. Their chemistry is even more surprising than the smooth flow of the story’s action amidst a love affair. Together they are like that uncommon state of smoke and ice. Maybe this is the secret of the legendary gun aptly named the Mexican.
Lawrence Bender does a really good job producing a multifaceted film. It is also a testament to his management of imposing circumstances. Can an actor, or actress, exceed the commanding presence of Roberts or Pitt? How often do action films build a relationship from scene to scene? Are romance films typically filled with adventure? Or does a critical moment of action culminate alongside the romance? Lawrence Bender brings all these things together without confusing the audience’s emotions or logical flow of the story.
Born in The Bronx borough of New York City, Lawrence Bender has become one of the most accomplished and daring producers. Throughout the course of his life, he has advanced several environmental and political issues. But Lawrence Bender’s heart has always belonged to artistic endeavors. He may have been known as a prominent ballet dancer had his career not been cut short due to injury.
With dancing behind him, he went on to captivate audiences with movies like Reservoir Dogs (1992) and An Inconvenient Truth (2006). Three of his films, Pulp Fiction (1994), Good Will Hunting, and Inglourious Basterds (2009) were nominated for best picture. His fans have come to expect the minor intrigue of him taking on small roles in the movies that he produces.
