You unfairly picked on my hometown. Hartselle has faults, it is WAY too
religious for me... and dry (related). It has a strong streak of the
inevitable small-town-grown-up brand of ruthlessness of the City
Council. But, what you describe is NOT a trait at all. Compared to
Huntsville (or Nashville), Hartselle is Mayberry, not some KKK hang-out
as you apparently believe.
I have first-hand experience of the transition to desegregation of
schools in Hartselle versus Decatur. Decatur had serious problems in
both high schools while Hartselle never did. I didn't hear you picking
on Decatur.
When I worked in Iowa in 1978, a co-worker wanted a local paper. (He
collected newspapers from different places.) I picked up a Sunday
Decatur Daily on the way to the interstate. To my dismay, that issue had
a huge color photo in the center of the front page of a pickup LOAD of
KKK guys in full dress, with shotguns displayed, on 6th Avenue. This
represented Decatur to my friend in Iowa. But, I didn't hear you
picking on Decatur.
