Dear Editor,
The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence states: "That whenever
any
Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of
the
People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying
its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form,
as
to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." and,
"it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards
for their future security".
The Alabama Constitution is a powerful do***ent that mirrors the
Declaration
of Independence. It is a contract between the people and government, a
covenant, wherein all political power resides with the people. The Alabama
constitution's Declaration of Rights, Section 2 says that the people are
the
source of power, and provides that at all times the people have an
inalienable and indefeasible right to change their form of government in
such manner as they may deem expedient. Our constitution was designed to
limit the authority of those in power but it also has been used to keep
power with legislators rather than the people who own and finance our
government.
It is essential that legislators bring HB325, an Initiative and Referendum
constitutional amendment, out of committee pass it, and place it on the
ballot next November. This is the mechanism the people need, and
legislators
should provide this to us expeditiously.
Initiative and Referendum would give "We the People" a tool to use, if
necessary, to have a real voice in our government and make it finally a
Government by the people and for the people.
It amazes me that media has not informed the public of the im****tance of
HB325.
