I noticed on my natural gas (AlaGasCo) bill last month that we are
paying $3.03 per 100 CuFt. In Jan 2000 the cost was $0.70 per 100
CuFt.
We can thank the environmental movement for this. They shut down
construction of nuclear power plants for 30 years, forcing utilities
to use combined cycle natural gas fired turbines for meeting a lot of
the electric load. Now, compared to 30-years ago, the electric power
industry is the primary purchaser of natural gas that otherwise would
be used for home heating.
