I am somewhat relieved to finally see an example of Israeli jews critical
of
jewish policy as it pertains to the West Bank and Gaza. Clearly there are
at
least some critics and according to the CBC do***entary from the
Passionate
Eye "Raised to be Heroes", the number proclaimed is 1600 and growing.
"...There are more than 1,600 "refuseniks" in Israel and this number is
growing. Many Israelis condemn them for failing their nation; however they
stand by their principles in the hopes of ending Israel's military action
in
the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Through a series of emotional testimonials,
Raised to Be Heroes do***ents a group of "refuseniks" as they recount the
moment when they finally drew the line..."

It should be noted that the do***entary shows Israeli news clips and the
debate is internal. Now, where are the equivalent voices from the west?
Without a doubt, the responsibility lies with some indefinable element or
elements within the jewish community but in North America, as far as main
stream media goes, we hear scarcely little of any such opposition to
policy.
This IMO is counter-productive to the Israeli cause.
At one point the film shows one of the IDF refuseniks in a street debate
with demonstrators sup****ting Israel. The gentleman speaking with a heavy
New York accent, clad in a hat, gl***** and scarf as to conceal every
feature of his face except that of his nose, asks the refusenik "Do you
believe in Torah?" and "Are you a religious jew?". The IDF refusenik
answers, "No". The demonstrator asserts, "No, of course you're not,
otherwise you would know that god gave the land to Abraham. The land
belongs
to Israel.. that's it.. end of story".
This do***entary was made possible by the National Film Board of Canada. I
wonder how many complaints they will receive?
