In 1967 Canada celebrated its first 100 years of confederation. Prior to
the
year long celebration the nation was divided over issues relating to
inflation, economic recession, government budget deficits and Quebec
separatism.
Dominion day was held July 1 and in November, the "Confederation of
Tomorrow" conference was held at the newly built Toronto-Dominion Bank
Tower. Convened by then Ontario Premier John Robarts, the summit of
provincial premiers led to a new round of federal-provincial negotiations
to
amend the Canadian Constitution.
Other notable events included a significant change in immigration policy,
Expo '67, Pierre Berton's book "The Last Good Year" and the centennial
logo.
Some interesting things to note about the latter.
The image is a series of 11 triangles depicting a maple leaf. Curiously
similar to the jewish star of david but for the last triangle and in its
place the maple leaf's stem. The stem connects and is one with the lower
center triangle to form an arrow rising from the bottom, entering and
ending
at the center of the leaf.
If a picture paints a thousand words, what a curious design indeed.
