The usual method of executing criminals in England was hanging. The
terrible 
method you mention was extremely rare and only applied to traitors who put

the entire country in peril. The upper cl***** who were convicted of
treason 
were beheaded at the Tower but even this was rare because I doubt that
even 
20 people ever were executed this way over a 300 year period.
