California Anti-Spam Law

It takes an "opt-in" approach against unwanted e-mail, requiring senders
to
obtain the recipient's permission before sending commercial e-mail to a
California e-mail address. Violators may be fined up to $1000 for each
message to an individual and up to $1 million for each e-mail
advertisement
sent out. The law took effect January 1, 2004.
