Border Fence Trumps Law

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff must have felt 
quite royal last week when he tem****arily suspended more than 30 laws
that, 
in his opinion, may interfere with the "expeditious construction of 
 barriers" along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Chertoff's unbridled legal authority in this matter is the result of a
2005 
congressional resolution that ceded all power over matters of border fence

construction to the DHS secretary, a stellar and disgusting example of the

Bush administration's broad claim to the idea of unilateral executive
branch 
power.
