We have the technology, but not the political will.

Biggest example is the [planned] Yucca Mountain waste repository.  I was
working 
in the nuclear industry back in the mid 80s, and it was due to be ready to
start 
accepting waste 'in about 7-10 years.'  It still hasn't opened, mainly due
to 
the absurd politics -- mainly NIMBY issues that are also raised by
non-locals --  
that go along with anything nuclear.  I wouldn't count on any new fission 
powerplants in the US until it's WAY too late...

OTOH, there have been some recent advances in controlled fusion.  They are
still 
on the micro-scale, but show promise for scaling up to the size needed for

reasonable sized powerplants.

Also, FWIW, government subsidies are virtually the ONLY thing keeping
solar, 
wind, and hydrogen power research alive, not to mention biofuels which are

turning into a major economic debacle right now...
