Hallelujah, Brother! So glad to see that you haven't allowed that
nasty old "logic" stuff creep into your ultracon doctrine!
After your mental floodwaters recede 30 centimtres or so, get down to
the library and catch up on your reading. Check out any standard
Economics 100 textbook, and turn to the chapter titled "Supply &
Demand".
Then write 1000 times on the blackboard: "When supply decreases faster
than demand, prices tend to increase; when supply decreases
precipiately, prices tend to increase in a like manner".
The fact is that the average price increase of 40 cents per litre of
gasoline over the past 9 to 12 months is almost entirely due to (1)
increases in demand, notably from China and India and (2) sudden
reduction in supply from Gulf of Mexico oil platforms and Gulf Coast
refineries due to hurricane damage.
In Canada, less than 4.5 cents of that 40-cent increase is due to
federal taxes; the rest is due to good old "Supply & Demand".
