CRTC plans to eliminate Roamer Access numbers by the end of August.
What does this mean for cell phone users in Canada ?
Lets say a family from Ottawa is vacation in PEI. Each member of the
family has a cell phone. Husband decides to call his wife to see
where
she and the kids are in the shopping mall.
Well now you can avoid a long distance from PEI to Ottawa, and Ottawa
back
PEI by using 511 or the local roaming access number.
After August 30th, you are going to occurring a long distance charge per
phone, one in each direction.
The CRTC is forcing this upon the phone companies for the sake of allowing
number portability , which is that if your switch companies, you can keep
your same number. It's a idea from USA, except that in the USA, your
local calling area of most cell phone packages is the entire country.
For myself it think its not that important to keep my same phone number if
I
decided to change phone companies , if it means having to pay long
distance
to call a person in the same building !!!
Remember this is not the phone companies fault , its the Canadian Radio
and
Television Commission who came to this decision for the need for number
portability.
It's time to stop this unfair decision by flooding the CRTC with your
disagreement of this poor decision for Canadians. That average Canadian
does not need or require "number portibility" if it means occuring long
distance charges for trying to keep track of family love ones.
