Refugee crime tsunami has Houston reeling
Houston is facing a fiscal crisis as a result of a Katrina-borne Black
crime
tsunami that has engulfed the Texas metropolis. Many Houston schools are
in
near-chaos as a result of ongoing brawling between local Blacks and New
Orleans evacuees, over 100,000 of whom were relocated to Houston. The city
also saw a 70% jump in homicides in November and December of 2005 over
2004, which observers are linking to the presence of Katrina refugees.
The crisis is so acute that the Houston Police Department has been forced
to
form a special Neighborhood Enforcement Team Taskforce to grapple with the
Katrina-related violence. The NETT program is so expensive that the city
is
asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for $6.5 million to
help pay for the project.
FEMA, which resettled the refugees, has been criticized by officials in
Texas for ingoring their responsibilities to help local officials deal
with
Katrina crime. As reported here at V-News, Texas authorities only recently
rounded up a number of Katrina fugitives after a long fight with FEMA for
relevant information.
Katrina Blacks have wreaked havoc across the United States, but their
absence in New Orleans has led to a relatively peaceful Crescent City.
FEMA itself has been the focus of serious concerns about alleged
irregularities in contract decisions.
