tracing roots

can anyone help, i have been tracing my ancestors and i have run into a
obstacle. i traced my great great grandmother back to a slaveholder but
i am not sure how to find out if she was born on his plantation or if
she, herself was im****ted. can someone give me some ideas as to where
and how to look? she was on the plantatio of a w.c clanton in 1854  in
halifax county north carolina
can anyone give me some ideas?
