I've been in this house for just about 6 years now and have more or less
had a problem with shrews from day one (I just didn't know it). After
doing pretty well with traditional mouse traps, we've now got a least one
that is smart enough not to touch traps anymore (or at least not to eat
cheese).
I occasionally go in a zone on weekends where I stay up way later than I
should. When that happens, I binge eat. Last night it was muffins, then
chocolate chip cookies, then crackers. When I finally hauled my butt
upstairs at 3 am, I left an unopened pack of soda crackers on my computer
table. This morning I find that one end has been eaten through by a
stinking shrew, which means the sucker climbed up my computer cords to get
to it.
We pretty much keep all food that is not canned or in glass up in the
cupboards that are above the kitchen counter. No sign of shrews up there,
but any place below counter top, like drawers, is subject to invasion.
1) What can I do to get rid of these pests??? Switch bait? Buy some fox
smell liquid that is supposed to make them run away in a panic? Get a
stinking cat? The idea of rodent poison bothers me as I don't want these
guys tracking that stuff around, and they'd probably learn not to eat that
too, no?
2) What can I do to keep them out once gone? Pour Fox smell around the
perimeter? Would this scare off the bunnies and birds that come to visit?
Should I stick a metal sleeve up the bottom of my siding so they can't
enter walls from the outside? What about the garage door?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Robert
