This post relates to Alaska especially with the upcoming election. If
the Democrats win the White House they say they will scrap the Missile
Defense Program that has provided and is providing good jobs for
interior Alaskans. They also say they will cut defense spending and
probably downsize Ft. Wainwright and Eielson Air force Base and
possibly close Eielson. Eielson almost got closed under the base
closure program a few years ago. Ft. Wainwright has had a massive
build up under Bush and is home to a Stryker Brigade which also might
go away if the war in Iraq is stopped. The gas pipeline has not
started yet and the trans-Alaska pipeline is less than half full. The
Democrats are dead set on not drilling in ANWR and support strong
environmental controls. In addition to all this Senator Stevens and
Don Young are losing their stroke in Washington with the
investigations and the ending of earmarks.
The bottom line is if Obama or Hillary is elected Alaska is going to
see and economic depression like it hasn't seen in many years. The
nation in general is seeing bad economic times with the price of fuel
heading to $4 a gallon and food prices also rising. Alaska almost
always votes republican, but the lower forty eight may put in a
Democrat. So to all you Alaskans, plant big gardens this summer and
fill the freezers with meat because we could be in for some very bad
economic times. I would put in a wood stove if you don't already have
one.
Of course the local unions will tell us to vote for the Democrats like
they always do, but I just do not understand why that would be good
for Alaska.
