Alaska Was: Larry Beck
I'd like to know anything you Old Timers can remember about what ever
happened to Larry Beck, "Alaska's Ambassador." I'd heard he died at
his own hand at least 15 years ago,
There is, though, a billboard that says he is still doing shows at the
Egan Center (http://www.familytravelguides.com/articles/alaska/
anchorag.html
at the bottom of the ad).
I've been trying to find out, if he has passed, whether there was any
kind of estate, any family, or any copyright still in force for his
poetry.
I have a signed box of cassettes that has an enormous number of his
recitals on it, as well as an hour of recitals by Robert Service. I'd
really
hoped to post a few of the recitals on a web site, but I don't want
to
violate any copyrights.
Right now, I can't find ANY record of his death, nor any sales of
his stuff other than really rare copies of his records and a couple of
his books. There are damned-few-to-none pictures of him on-line.
There is only ONE reference to his "Mother Moose" TV program,
too.
So - what can you tell me about Larry Beck's demise? I'd heard he
pitched himself out of a hotel window on one of his tours. I knew he
suffered from massive depression. I found that loss very sad. Can
anyone add to this, or is he still alive?
As to knowing him? I only knew one of his early assistants who was
a Miss Alaska back in about '64, and who student taught at Central
back then (I think). I used to go to his performances. I also used to
take business people to his performances in the 80's in Los
Anchorage. I talked to him quite a few times, but can't say I "knew
him" as such. I loved his performances. I'd heard he actually had
permission from Robert Service's widow to continue poetry in the
style that was so unique to Service.
I know, there was that guy at the saloon in Ester who was equally
good, and I loved him too. But Larry was the showman, and he did
manage to get one of his books prefaced by a Governor.
If he did pass, his whole work sure passed with him.
