Nearly 50 Illegal CIA Flights Have Used Spain's Air Space
Havana, Nov 13 (acn) Some 50 illegal CIA flights flew over Spain
between 2002 and 2007, coming from or heading for the US Military Base
in the Cuban territory of Guantanamo, a recruitment camp where
Wa****ngton tortures prisoners of its so-called war on terror.
According to an article posted on the Website of Spain's El Pais
newspaper, a total of 47 planes crossed Spanish airspace; 22 of these
flights occurred during Jose Maria Aznar?s term of office, and 25
happened with Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in the presidency; and at
least 11 of them stopped over in Spanish air bases.
The newspaper says that the entity named "Aeropuertos Espaoles y
Navegacion Aerea" (Spanish Air****ts and Air Navigation), AENA by its
Spanish acronyms, which is an office of Spain's Ministerio de Fomento
(Department of Development), submitted the information to Supreme Court
Judge Ismael Moreno, who is in charge of investigating CIA flights that
move "illegally detained or kidnapped persons."
Judge Moreno was motivated to ask AENA after El Pais released, on
February 12, some information on planes flying to Guantanamo from the
Spanish air bases of Rota, Torrejon and Moron, based on data gathered
by air traffic control centers in ****tugal.
The do***ent submitted by AENA refers to eight flights in 2002, seven
in 2003, twelve in 2004, nine in 2005, nine in 2006, and two in
February 2007. Stopovers were made in the Spanish air bases of Rota
(Cadiz) -six planes-, Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid)-two planes- Moron de
la Frontera (Sevilla)-two-, and one flight stopped over in Tenerife
Norte.
These were mostly large military aircrafts with room for over 100
people, among them the C-17 Globemaster, C-141, DC-10, and the air
refueling K35R. One of the flights, the Saudia B-743, flew this year
from the Guantanamo Military Base to Casablanca, in Morocco.
Most planes landed in Incirlik Air Base(Turkey), usually a stop over
for flights going or coming from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Despite parliamentary debate on the issue on several occasions, the
government did not pass this information to the Parliament.
Nevertheless, a note by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs -also published
by El Pais- corroborates the fact that the government did have the list
of flights provided by AENA to the Supreme Court.
El Pais further comments that Spain does not inspect US planes that
make stopovers in Moron, Rota or Torrejon, and that the corresponding
cargo manifest provided to the authorities does not include the
passenger list as it is stipulated.
When making reforms to the 1992 bilateral treaty, Bush and Aznar agreed
that the nature and finality of US planes stopping over in Spanish
ground would not be questioned, says the article published by El Pais.
