New information for Prof. Dr. Taner Akcam re Armenians in WWI

by "Bilge Khan" <bilgekhan@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Nov 20, 2007 at 01:52 AM

The pro-Armenian Turkish professor Taner Akcam wrote:

"I believe that the policy towards the Armenians in 1915,
the policy of the Ittihad ve Terakki [Union and Progress] Party,
meets the definition of genocide as set forth in the
1948 United Nations Convention on Genocide."

and further in the same statement he writes:

"As new information or documentation could
cause me to change my position on the matter,
I may later also express a different opinion."

And in another statement Prof. Taner Akcam said (lied?):

"The argument says there were Armenian uprisings. It is simply a lie.
The deportations were taking place before any Armenian uprising."

Here is surely some 'new' information for Prof. Taner Akcam:
Newspaper articles showing that the Armenians were
collaborating with the enemy army and committing crimes
against the local population (ethnic cleansings for creating
their own independent state "Armenia"). Therefore these
Armenians had to be treated as enemy, and had to leave
the war zone to end their support of the enemy army.
They had to be deported from the area as it was a necessary
war-time measure under such conditions of WWI.
The deportations started June 1915. The following newspaper
articles are from sometime before that date:

Campaign Against Turkey
The Armenians are aiding the Russians in the campaign
against Turkey. The Turkish town of Van, 140 miles southeast
of Erzerum, Turkish Armenia, is being besieged by the Armenians.
Another Armenian detachment in the year of the Turkish Army.
If the Armenians succeed in capturing this important place that
will place a large arsenal in their hands. The campaign against
Turkey will be divided into two plans. One will be first to attack
from the Black sea, the second to cross the mountains into Asiatic
Turkey. This plan is already under way. Columns of the Caucasian army
are skirting the slopes of Mount Araat and Cossacks have slipped
through the passes and are pushing-back the Turks.

"Armenians Aid Russians."
Petrograd, Dec. 9.- A Tiflis message says after several days
of hot fighting the Russians have won a success on the
Perso-Turkish frontier, receiving substantial assistance
from the Armenian irregulars and the population.

"...
While Armenian propaganda insists the poor, innocent
Armenians were only acting out of "self-defense,"
we even have Turk-hostile Western newspaper articles
to confirm this lie. The Armenians were doing the attacking.
The Armenians served as an extremely serious threat
to the survival of the Ottoman nation. If it were any other nation
threatened by such a dangerously treacherous community,
that nation would have dealt with the Armenians ruthlessly,
very likely in a far less humane manner than the Ottomans'
decision to relocate their disloyal Armenians.
(Britain and Russia acted against minorities who only had the
potential of turning disloyal during WWI, and Russia in particular
treated their Germans and Turks/Muslims with great savagery

NYT 29 Sep 1915: "Armenians Brought Reprisals on Themselves by Trying to

ARMENIANS' OWN FAULT, Bernstorff Now Says

"They Brought Reprisals on Themselves by Trying to Stir Up Rebellion
Against Turkey"

Special to The New York Times.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28.-Count von Bernstorff's letter to Miran Sevasly
of Boston, in which he said that, "according to recent official and
authentic reports received by the German Government and transmitted
by this embassy to the Government of the United States, the alleged
atrocities committed in the Ottoman Empire appear to be a pure
invention," is puzzling the Department of State.

The German Ambassador today sent a communication to the department
saying reports of Turkish atrocities against Armenians were "greatly
exaggerated," and defending in part the action of the Turks,
as having been provoked.

While the Ambassador's letter does not deny that extreme penalties have
been imposed on Armenians by the Turks it is stated that attempts to
stir up rebellion and revolt and treasonable activity have made the
"Armenian policy" a necessary war-time measure.

The State Department today received from the American Consul at
Trebizond a report showing that the "Armenian population" of that large
Armenian province had been expelled. The property of the expelled
Armenians has been taken over by agents of the Turkish Government,
who are settling claims against the expelled owners. The Consul reported,
that many Armenian commission merchants who had resided in the province
had accounts with Europeans. Few Americans were affected, he thought,
but if any American has a claim against an Armenian in the Province of
Trebizond he may get it paid by sending to the Consul an affidavit
indorsed by a Turkish Consul.

Since Turkey has let it be known that no foreign interference with her
Armenian policy will be permitted the United States will probably avoid
the matter as a subject for any formal protest unless Americans become
involved.

And here is the program of one of the Armenian revolutionary parties of
then:

Social Democrat Hunchakian Party Program - 1887 :
"
....
III. The Hunchak program advocated revolution as the only means
of reaching the immediate objective. The arena of revolutionary activity
was designated as Turkish Armenia. The Hunchaks said that the
existing social organization in Turkish Armenia could be changed
by violence against the Turkish government and described the
following methods: Propaganda, Agitation, Terror, Organization,
and Peasant and Worker Activities.

Propaganda was to be directed to the people to educate them
toward two goals. The party was to explain to them the basic reasons
and the proper time for revolution against the government, thereby
indoctrinating them with the basic idea of revolution. This goal, however,
was not sufficient in itself. The people had to have a knowledge
of the social order that was to be established after the successful
revolution.

Agitation and Terror were needed to "elevate the spirit of the people."
Demonstrations against the government, refusal to pay taxes,
demands for reforms' and hatred of the aristocracy were part
of the party's agitation campaign. The people were also to be
incited against their enemies and were to "profit" from the
retaliatory actions of these same enemies.

Terror was to be used as a method of protecting the people and
winning their confidence in the Hunchak program. The party aimed
at terrorizing the Ottoman government, thus contributing toward
lowering the prestige of that regime and working toward its
complete disintegration. The government itself was not to be
the only focus of terroristic tactics. The Hunchaks wanted to
annihilate the most dangerous of the Armenian and Turkish individuals
who were then working for the government, as well as to destroy
all spies and informers. To assist them in carrying out all of these
terroristic acts, the party was to organize an exclusive branch,
specifically devoted to performing acts of terrorism.

The Organization of the party was to be a centralized system
directed by a central executive committee. The Hunchaks believed
that the revolution could not be won by the participation of the
party organization alone. They considered it absolutely essential
to win the active support of the peasants and workers. There were
to be two large revolutionary groups, one of peasants and the
other of workers. Besides these separate groups, there would
be guerrilla bands, composed of both peasants and workers,
who would become fighting units during the anticipated revolution.
The role of the peasants and workers was not to end after the victory,
for the Hunchaks saw in these two groups the very basis of the
society that was to be thereafter established. The peasants and
workers were to protect the gains and interests of the people,
and were to take the reins of government and rule according to
democratic principles. The plan giving the details of these
governing principles was to be published at a later date.

IV. The most opportune time to institute the general rebellion for
carrying out the immediate objective was when Turkey was engaged in a war.
The Hunchaks were ready to fight not only the Ottoman regime,
but any other power that wished to dominate Turkish Armenia.
