On June 4, 2005, The Australian re****ted that a Chinese diplomat is on
the run with his family and seeking asylum in Australia.
Chen Yonglin, 37, the consul for political affairs at the Chinese
consulate-general in Sydney, said the security staff were looking for
him after he left the mission seven days ago.
Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman confirmed
"an official from the Chinese consulate had applied to the Department
of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs for a protection visa".
According to the re****t, his asylum request was denied but the DFAT
official told him he could apply for a protection visa.
Chen claimed he was responsible for monitoring political dissidents,
including members of the controversial religious sect Falun Gong,
during the past four years in his post.
