On June 7, 2005, China Daily re****ted that a Shanghai taxi company has
banned its cabs with unlucky license plates from carrying students and
their parents to sit the National College Entrance Examinations in
early June.
Dazhong, Shanghai's largest taxi company, would not carry students in
cabs whose license plates ending in the number "4", which sounds the
same as "lose" in Shanghai dialect. Many Chinese also avoid "4"
because it is pronounced the same as "death" in Mandarin. In addition,
the number "6" is not appreciated because it sounds the same as "fall"
in Shanghai dialect. It is considered to bring back luck for
examination takers.
Zhao Leping, Dazhong's boss, said, "Lots of parents refuse to take cabs
with number plates which they consider unlucky. We've seen many of
them get angry at us because we have used them to carry their children
in past years."
