On October 4, 2005, a government-affiliated research body in China
announced in Beijing that it will develop China's own DVD format to
break the foreign monopoly in DVD manufacturing.

According to the news, the new Chinese DVD format is based on the
HD-DVD but incompatible with its systems. It is scheduled to put in
market before 2008. China produced about 70% or 80% of the world's DVD
players, but licensing fee accounts for 40% of a rough cost of each
player.
