The 'Republic of Cyprus' you mention does NOT exist any more. The present
'Republic of Cyprus' is a different animal. The constitution drawn up for
the original Republic of Cyprus was thrown into the dustbin for starters
and
the International London and Zurich Agreements declared null and void.

The Sovereign British Base Areas were agreed under the London and Zurich
Agreements between Britain, Turkey, Greece and representatives of Turkish
and Greek Cypriots. Makarios, the first President of the Republic of
Cyprus
was one of the signatories. Incidentally he was the one who tore up the
Agreements only three years after they were signed. Funnily enough when
Greece staged a coup in Cyprus and toppled him in 1974 it was the Brits
who
saved his skin. They used to say that Makarios was after annexing Greece
to
Cyprus!!! (Or is this MY way of expressing the reality in MY words? --
anyway I hope you get the general drift of my views!!!). Talk of Byzantine
politics!!!!

The Base Areas are Sovereign and therefore no rent is payable. Nor is it
demandable contrary to what Greek Cypriots tried to extract from the
British
on several occasions so far.

Greeks love money but also can be very anti-British. Naturally what I said
does not apply to all social classes. Though on the whole Greek Cypriots
do
know which side their bread is buttered on. But that doesn't stop them
becoming very anti-British when the occasion arises but their love of
money
is too strong.

Yes, they do. Moreover there is a monitoring dome up on the Troodos
mountains.

Yes, Greek Cypriots do derive extensive material advantage from the
existence of the British bases on Cyprus. That is a fact.

Please do not try to find any logical reasons in what Greek Cypriots get
up
to. And please but please do not try to talk reason to them. They are an
emotional people and reason and logic have no role to play in their
behaviour.

And having said all this as a Turkish Cypriot who knows and understands
Greek Cypriots well, I can now sit back and enjoy the salvoes that will
come
my way even through they will miss me by a mile and a half!!!
