The population was too massive for the missionaries to handle and this
is the sole reason why India remains a Hindu land.
Historically, the ancient practices that originated were in many ways
a result of the need to adapt with the environment and the natural
forces acting therein. "Hinduism" is not just the teachings in a set
of books, it includes all the different practices that mostly involve
in many ways trying to please forces of nature - wind, fire, sun, rain
etc. All these forces were later on given anthropomorphic forms.
Agamas is a natural outcome of this. This aspect of "Hinduism" can
also be seen in most native practices, as in the case of the
aboriginies of Australia, the native indians in the Americas etc. The
success of the missionaries in those lands was much greater solely
because the population was much sparser.
Those people how berate the astronomical population in India overlook
this im****tant contribution that numerical strength has made.
