French has a poor vocabulary (André Martinet (Sorbonne)) (it must often
borrow words from Greek and Latin to make new words and the derivation
system is inefficient). In comparison, Spanish has a much more developed
vocabulary, mostly thanks to an efficient derivation system.
Moreover, the close semantic link between the different lexemes listed

can be directly observed by the Spanish speaker. This is not the case for
the corresponding French words.
At last, let us not forget the appalling French spelling system, compared
