Years ago, when people still used Usenet newsgroups in great numbers,
this group became awash in posts by psychics and wannabe gurus and
people obsessed with their own imagined magical powers of dream
interpetation. A significant lot of people would almost /never/ post
their own dreams but would post a reply to every other person's dream
and reply to every reply across threads to insist that everyone else was
a knucklehead and they themselves had the only true understanding not
only of what everyone else's dreams were about, but of the underlying
structure of the universe and crystal quantum interdimensionality and
Jesus too. The argument threads were sometimes fun, but seeing
first-time writers being pounced on probably discouraged a lot of
lurkers from sending their dreams-- and also there obnoxious middle-aged
men who would pay close attention to anything written by any young woman
and would ask creepy questions and make /creepy/ comments. I thought all
of that was the reason for less and less dream posts, so I suggested
(three times in as many years) that each person send at least one dream
post for every non-dream post, and let that simple rule of etiquette
--you know, posting mostly on the topic of the group-- make alt.dreams
more hospitable for dreams.
Nowadays people are afraid to use Usenet newsgroups at all for many
reasons besides thin skin, so the point has become moot. Still, I use
the group for what it was intended for: to send dreams for others to
read and enjoy reading others' dreams. The idea was for it to be a
collective dream journal, to naturally produce a record of the dreams of
this time.
Please send your dreams and have fun.
