"S****ts as we know them" is the culture of commercialised professional
s****ts, especially. Expensive game tickets, outrageously priced
concession food, endorsed products and the like. This is a hallmark of
a culture and society that is _very_ wealthy. I'm not saying it's a
Bad Thing, but it does mean we have the wherewithal to engage in a
goodly amount of frivolity that our ancestors of a few centuries ago
would not have been able to do.

I guess we could look at modern s****tsters as a kind of modern
analogue to the priestly cl***** of early civilisations, in that they
provide a service to greater society that does not involve directly
sup****ting society (like farmers and builders and warriors do) and
must be sup****ted by the workers and live rather high on the hog to
boot.

But even then, 3 millenia ago, organised religion was a luxury too! It
meant that not _everyone_ in society had to be out searching for and
gathering food.
