for "language", whether natural, constructed or otherwise.
The negative connotation I've always had derives from "confidence
game", or "con". As in con-man, ex-con, con-game, etc. As a name, it
does rather give our activity a potentially less than savory image, as
con- indicates fakery, or deliberate obfuscation.
