I sympathize. My parents were awfully conventional in their thinking
too. I don't think they aware of my conlanging; I never mentioned it to
them. 

My classmates in high school knew about the language I was working on,
but it was merely one of a hundred ways in which I seemed weird to
them. If I recall correctly my physical clumsiness and slightly odd
style of walking got a lot more ridicule than my conlanging.
