VILLIERS ATTACKS YET ANOTHER CYPRUS BETRAYAL FROM BROWN
NEWS DESK
Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers has today attacked Gordon Brown in
relation to an official Foreign Office document which refers to the
so-called "TRNC". The document, which was the result of a meeting held on
23
October in London between British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his
Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, commits both Britain and Turkey
to
'continued help for "TRNC" and bilaterally promote direct commercial,
economic, political and cultural contacts between the UK, the EU and the
Turkish Cypriots."
..
Commenting on the document, entitled Turkey/United Kingdom Strategic
Partner****p 2007/8, Theresa Villiers said:
"I am shocked to see the so-called "TRNC" regime referred to in a formal
document issued by the Foreign Office. If it were not for the track record
of this government, I would say this was a crass drafting error but this
is
all part of a pattern."
"The government has let Cypriots down badly by its one-sided stance on
issues like direct trade and direct flights. Many of my Cypriot
constituents
will be angry and upset by this latest move by Gordon Brown's government.
This is another betrayal from Gordon Brown on Cyprus."
"It seems to me that the British government has given up on the vision of
a
united Cyprus with both communities living together as a single nation in
a
single state. They seem to be getting closer and closer to accepting
permanent partition."
Mrs Villiers was also critical of Joan Ryan, the Prime Minister's special
representative to Cyprus, remarking:
"And what was Joan Ryan's role in this fiasco? If her role is to promote
good relations between the Cypriot community and the government she
represents she is doing a very poor job."
Neither can Gordon Brown hide from his role in this debacle. Commenting,
Theresa said:
"Instead of signing cosy strategic partner****ps, why isn't the Prime
Minister banging the table with the Ankara government to make progress on
Cyprus?"
