Skull find reveals ancient surgery nearly 1,800 years ago in Greece

Athens - A skull of a young woman found during a dig in northern Greece
has 
revealed that she had undergone head surgery nearly 1,800 years ago,
reports 
said Thursday. Archaeologists who discovered the skeleton at an ancient 
cemetery in the town of Veria said the skull bore perforations that
indicate 
emergency surgery had been performed, according to a report published in
the 
Greek daily Kathimerini newspaper.

Evidence shows that the skull had belonged to a woman who had suffered a 
severe blow to the head and had died during, or after the operation.

Ancient writings contain frequent references to such operations but 
perforated skulls are rarely found in Greece, scientists said.

      Greek archaeologists find proof of brain surgery performed on a
young 
woman living 1800 years ago in the northern part of the country.

      The woman's skeleton, which was found in the city of Veria, shows
that 
the patient died during or shortly after the operation, AP reported.

      "We interpret the find as a case of complicated surgery which only a

trained and specialized doctor could have attempted," said the site 
excavator, Ioannis Graikos.

      There are numerous references to such operations in ancient
writings, 
but very few surgically perforated skulls have been discovered in Greece.
