Sez in the Bible that "the sins of the fathers are visited upon their
children
unto the third and fourth generations." Which is to say that if you trash
your family and kids it will take 3 or four generations to undo your sins.
That's the kind of sin that people have visited upon them. Hardly
original,
and "heritable" only in the sense of social function.
Original Sin is a different thing entirely. It seeks to explain our
current
"imperfect" condition without benefit of evolution or social progress, but
derived the same way: obviously we musta _really_ fucked up to be where
we are today.
Although Calvin didn't have a rigorous evolutionary theory availably, he
did have the concept of social evolution or Progress, an from this derived
that "Original Sin" was either
1. meaningless from the point of the practical existence of mortal humans
(because of forgiveness)
OR
2. an evil delusion intended to *lead* humans into sin against themselves
an others, resulting in the usual "three or four generations" of ill
effect.
