A prominent Melbourne psychologist has taken Age art critic Robert
Nelson to task over his views on child ****ity and art, accusing him of
relying on "psychobabble" and discarded theories to back his position.
Michael Carr-Gregg was responding to the latest controversy
surrounding Mr Nelson: an essay he wrote in 2000 to accompany a series
of **** photographs of his then two-year-old daughter.
In the essay, Mr Nelson refers to the "sensuality of children" and
talks about the ***ual ambiguity of the images, taken by his wife
Polixeni Papapetrou.
A later image of the girl as a six-year-old was denounced by
politicians when it was used on the cover of Art Monthly Australia in
response to the furore over Bill Henson's **** photographs of
pubescent girls.
Dr Carr-Gregg said that Mr Nelson had "failed in a parent's duty of
care to protect his child".
"I don't believe that any six-year-old could possibly have the
cognitive or emotional maturity to consent to being photographed in
the way that her mother has photographed her," Dr Carr-Gregg said.
"I'm really worried that these pictures are on the net already and
they will go around the world and that they have the potential to
haunt this little girl for the rest of her life.
"Now she's very mouthy at 11 years old, she's already been paraded in
front of the cameras, and I, as an expert in bullying, would be very,
very concerned about what that might mean for her in her school life
later on."
In the essay, Mr Nelson states that "the sensuality of children is
integral to parental fondness". He notes that taboos have surrounded
recognising this, including "fear of the child's latent ***uality and
its potential for exciting inappropriate and sinful desire". Mr Nelson
writes that a dummy shown in some of the photos could evoke "the
perversity of pleasure-sucking", noting that this "outward sign of
innocence is potentially the most diabolically ***ual".
Mr Nelson writes that the photos of the two-year-old "challenge the
taboos against the recognition of child sensuality". They are not a
form of *****ca, however, "they do acknowledge that the child has
access rights to an *****c language".
The essay was criticised on several media websites.
Mr Nelson told The Age he had no regrets about any of the photos or
his essay. "In fact, the longer this goes on and the more stuff that's
thrown at me, the more I recognise the need to clear the air." It was
"a furphy" to suggest his daughter had been exposed to greater risk of
***ual abuse than any other child.
He said it was im****tant to put the essay in its context. Just as
Sigmund Freud wrote for a scientific audience, the essay and photos
were designed "for people who would understand the references".
The essay explored Freud's ideas of "the life force in children, and
what makes them motivated. In Freudian language, that's what he calls
libido."
"What I'm saying is that children have a libidinous element, and it's
an integral part of their innocence. It hasn't risen to adult
consciousness to do with reproduction. But it's there."
But Dr Carr-Gregg said many of Freud's psycho***ual theories were
being discarded. "I don't think it's a viable argument, the whole
sensuality of children argument," he said. "I think ordinary
Australians can and do interpret what (Mr Nelson) has done as
furthering the ***ualisation of children, and no amount of
misconstrued psychobabble is going to change that."
