West Australian Premier Alan Carpenter has angrily called for a fellow
Labor MP to put an end to claims that he lifted her top during a
karaoke night four years ago.
Labor MP Jaye Radisich today again refused to publicly deny claims
that Mr Carpenter exposed her bra at the karaoke party, held at
Bunbury's Sanctuary Golf Resort in 2004.
As state parliament prepared to resume sittings, Ms Radisich said
nothing had happened on the night to cause her offence.
But she did not deny the specific allegation that Mr Carpenter lifted
her top and exposed her bra.
"At the event in 2004, nothing happened to cause either (then Labor
MP) Louise (Pratt), nor I, any kind of offence," Ms Radisich said as
she arrived at parliament house.
"And, as I said, I don't intend to further edify the spectacle.
"It's about time that all of us as politicians raised the standard in
WA because the people that elected us deserve better than this."
Mr Carpenter again called on Ms Radisich to deny the claims.
"It's time this came to an end, this is the third day the story has
been running," Mr Carpenter told re****ters.
"No-one else says anything other than what's consistent with (what
I've been saying) and I just don't think it's tenable to be saying 'no
comment'.
"It was a karaoke night in front of a fairly substantial number of
people.
"This has gone on for too long. It's ridiculous and has to come to an
end."
Asked why Ms Radisich continued to refuse to rule out the claim, Mr
Carpenter said: "You'd have to ask Jaye and I can't tell you the
answer to that question. I'm not inside Jaye's mind.
"Jaye's now saying nothing offensive happened. Louise Pratt is saying
nothing untoward happened, what's the story here?
"If it (the top) was lifted, it wasn't lifted by me."
Dianne Guise, the Labor MP for Wanneroo, said she was sitting in the
front row at the karaoke night and did not see anything untoward.
Mr Carpenter, who is believed to be considering calling an election
before the end of the year, said he may raise the matter at a caucus
meeting today.
He said it was "an incredible time" in WA politics.
"I've been around WA politics for a long time now, 12 years in this
place and 10 years covering it (as a re****ter).
"I've never experienced a situation like that which we have at the
moment, what with the (situation in the) Liberal party, these
allegations about the karaoke night and (sacked Labor MP) John
D'Orazio forcing his way back into the party."
Mr D'Orazio last month rejoined the Labor Party after being sacked as
a police minister in 2006 and being forced to resign from the ALP over
corruption allegations.
Opposition Leader Troy Buswell yesterday survived a party room spill
motion following his admission that he sniffed the chair of a female
Liberal staffer in October 2005.
Mr Carpenter later said he believed the allegations against him were
linked to the current round of ALP preselections ahead of the next
election.
"There is an attempt being made to destroy my credibility," he told
re****ters.
"It's related to, I believe directly related to, the preselection
process. It has failed to move me on the preselection process.
"And now it's just doing damage to myself and to the party for no
reason whatsoever and it's got to stop."
