SERIOUS cases involving Aboriginal offenders that will be heard by
Australia's first Koori County Court, to be set up in Victoria by the
end of the year..,The court will remain a sentencing court that deals
with people who have pleaded guilty, in the same way existing Koori
magistrates courts operate...
A spokeswoman for Attorney-General Rob Hulls said that while the Chief
Judge of the County Court and others would be consulted to finalise
what offences the court would deal with,
Deputy Chief Magistrate Jelena Popovic, co-ordinator of the Koori
court at the Magistrates Court, said the Koori court was an excellent
way to give Aborigines a voice in the justice system.
Why has the Victorian Goverment the need to set up special County
Court for the Aboriginal people of Victoria? the Answer being, that
the Victorian Goverment has no proper legislated power to make Laws
for the Aboriginal People of Victoria. see (http://
