DeKalb County police describe it as a case of 21-year-old babysitter
versus
two-year-old boy -- a new version of an old, tragic tale.
The boy is dead. The babysitter, Desmond Walker -- the boyfriend of the
child's mother -- is in jail charged with murder.
And Walker may face additional felony charges.
"Our detectives believe that there may be some possible signs of ***ual
assault," said Mekka Parish of the DeKalb County Police Department. "They
have also uncovered some additional signs of physical abuse."
The child's mother had left her two-year-old, as well as the infant she
and
Walker had together, in Walker's care Thursday at the extended-stay motel
where they lived, Country Hearth Inn and Suites, on Guy Road, near Candler
Road and I-20.
"She's a student at Spelman [College in Atlanta]," said Yvonne White, who
resides at the motel a few doors down. "And she left this, this character
with her children. And he did this horrible crime. I'm just totally sick
from it."
White said that at about 10:00 Thursday morning, she passed by the
family's
room, Room 211, and "I had heard the weeping of a child, just crying."
She could not have known then what the houskeeper would discover in Room
211
about three hours later -- a bloodbath.
"There was blood all over the bathroom, all over the bathroom floor, and
on
the mattress. The child was ****," or was possibly wearing only a t-****rt,
on the bed.
"We thought the child was dead when they left the room," White said,
speaking of when EMTs carried the child to the ambulance, "because the
child's legs were limp."
By then the mother had arrived back at the motel. Walker had called her,
White said, "and told her that the child was bleeding and for her to come"
back to the motel right away.
Police have not released the cause of death, only that the child suffered
"serious injuries," Parish said.
Earlier news stories re****ted varying ages for the child, based on police
saying at first that the child was two, then saying he was four, then by
Friday afternoon saying the child had been born in 2005, but had not yet
turned three.
Police are investigating whether there had been on-going abuse in the
family. The Georgia Coalition Against Child Abuse said that in 2006, 16
children were killed in Georgia as a result of domestic violence. 2007
statistics have not been compiled, yet.
