This evening I heard Jeremiah Wright say he would not denounce Louis
Farakhan, and further stating that "he did not put me in chains, he did
not
put me into slavery, and he did not make me this color". I don't
understand
that. How does one's color get into the same category as slavery? Is
being
black as bad as being enslaved?
Why do I hear so many black leaders, mainly church leaders, talking
constantly about slavery and yet I never ever hear them mention that men
like my great-great-grandfather fought in the Union army against the
Confederaracy in the cause of ending slavery? It was white men who fought
to end that injustice. Why is that never mentioned? I've had black
people
tell me that white American's owe them reparations to compensate them for
the injustices of slavery. Wasn't fighting and the giving of lives
enough?
Why is there never credit given for that?
