No, you need to understand the evangelical mentality. It is one's
religious duty to impose yourself on others in order to save them. He
was not addressing fellow believers, but people he considers to be
non-believers (that is, people who don't happen to believe in exactly
same things he does). Of course, those attending the soc.culture.african
newsgroup are obviously heathen in serious need of being saved ;-)
In theory there may be a certain logic to here. If someone's drowning
you don't ask if saving him is the proper thing to do. But of course,
this is different. It is arrogant or ignorant to believe that your
personal assumptions happen to be the only valid ones; it is offensive
to intrude uninvited upon what is generally felt to be a person's
private life; when the evangelist reaches beyond is own country's
border, such as here, he engages in cultural imperialism.
