I did. I also note that Canada never got involved in genocide, unlike
the United States. That's why the Northwest Mounted Police wore red
jackets, to distinguish themselves from the US Cavalary, that band of
racist murderers and ethnic cleansers. It stopped them from being
attacked by Indians fleeing American persecution and by all accounts,
the Indians trusted them as the Mounties always kept their word and
dealt fairly and squarely with one and all.
It is interesting that both Chief Sitting Bull of the Lakota and Chief
Joseph of the Nez Perce sought refuge in Canada, don't you think? Most
of us consider Canada to be the moral response to United States'
aggression. In both cases the natives got their territories back; the
difference being that Canada didn't wipe out most of its native
peoples to get those territories in the first place.
Indeed, Sitting Bull's g-g-g-(?)granddaughter lives here in Vancouver
and is a casual acquaintance of mine. She looks exactly like the
pictures of her ancestor, and it was my remarking unsuspectingly on
the resemblance that caused her family to burst into laughter and for
her to produce the do***entary proof that she was indeed his direct
descendant.
Sic Transit Gloria, as Hines would be only too quick to cut and paste.
I might also add that I came to Canada in 1969 - from Scotland,
believe it or not - and have no intention of accepting blame for what
was done there before I arrived. I will concede that a member of our
family was Governor-General of Canada from 1898-1904, but as it's a
figurehead position, I really don't think that he can be blamed for
anything that happened during his tenure. He did serve earlier as
aide-de-camp to General Middleton during the North West Rebellion by
the Metis (half-breeds, as you would call them) and was made Viceroy
of India in 1905. From all accounts, he seems to have been a decent
and much admired chap.
Now why don't you tell us all about your family's contribution to the
United States? Assuming that it involved more than simply leeching off
the welfare/food stamps system? I understand you had a grandfather
whose constant harping on the evils of Britain made you into the
unpleasant, semi-literate hater of all thing British that you are
today.
I should remind you that l too am part-Irish and part Norse like all
Highland Gaels and thus not easily conned by Plastic Paddy blarney.
As your alleged ancestors should have told you - Ná gearradh do
theanga do shrón féin - Let not your tongue cut off your nose.
Given your insistance that I am not a Scot, let's see a snappy reply
in Irish to that! As we your Highland cousins would say in our Gaelic,
bidh glic - cùm do bheul dùinte agus do theanga balbh, oir is trom an
eire an t-aineolas
(be smart - keep your mouth closed and your tongue speechless, because
ignorance is a heavy burden.)
An dtuigeann tú, amadán?
