Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Tuesday called for
utilizing potential of the Islamic world through collective
resolve and by focusing on technological advancement
and ensuring energy, water and food security.
Musharraf was addressing the inaugural session of the
13th General Assembly meeting of the OIC Standing
Committee on Science and Technological cooperation
(COMSTECH) in Islamabad.
The President said only through collective resolve the
Muslim States can take the Ummah forward for realizing
their true potential.
He said nothing could be achieved without cooperation
and coordination among OIC member States and by
strengthening all the organs of the apex Muslim body.
He underlined the need for optimizing the potential in
various fields and by shaping the future for the coming
generations.
"Though the challenges facing the Ummah are formidable
but the Muslim countries have the potential to overcome them.
There is a need for moving faster in the fields of science
and technology for fast pace economic development"
Musharraf said.
The Secretary General of the OIC Professor Ekmeleddin
Ihsanoglu speaking on the occasion said that the OIC has
embarked on an ambitious ten year program of action adopted
by the OIC extraordinary summit in Makkah.
He said the program calls for dedicating at least one percent
of the GDP spending to projects in research and technology
in the member States.
The Coordinator COMSTECH Attaur Rehman speaking
on the occasion said the committee has undertaken one
hundred and fifty projects in different Muslim States.
Ahmed Muhammad Ali head of the Islamic Development Bank
in his speech stressed the need for investing in modern technology
projects for fast track economic development of the Ummah.
