and it's caused by the Rayleigh Effect. It's especially pronounced on
hot day when the leaves of gum trees exude tiny droplets of ethereal
oils into the surrounding air. They act like a barrier to the short
waves of the spectrum, the blues, and scatter them around the
mountains.
Unlike Ayers Rock/Uluru, which reflects the glowing red like a mirror,
the Blue Mountains are surrounded by an atmosphere which has the
blues.
