Sen*** slips below 16k: Infosys, Grasim worst hit
MUMBAI: Stocks lost further ground after the open as selling pressure
intensified on the back on weak global cues, but were off initial lows.
After last weeks over 9 per cent rise on the Sen***, traders lightened
positions. Domestic inflation, which rose to 6.68 per cent, also took its
toll on sentiment.
At 11:30 am, the Bombay Stock Exchange's Sen*** was down 408 points or
2.49
per cent at 15,963.40, making a low of 15,877.57.
Infosys Technologies (down 6.39%), Grasim Industries (4.85%), HDFC Bank
(4.75%), ICICI Bank (4.33%) and Satyam Computer (4.09%) were the biggest
index losers.
Cipla (up 1.82%), ITC (0.9%) and Hindalco Industries (0.51%) were the only
Sen*** gainers.
The National Stock Exchange's Nifty was down 110 points or 2.23 per cent
at
4831.7. The index touched a low of 4806.10.
Asian markets dropped Monday, with Japanese stocks dragged down by
financials such as Mizuho Financial Group on worries about global credit
markets, and ex****ters such as Honda Motor in the wake of a drop on Wall
Street and a stronger yen. The Nikkei lost 2.44 per cent, the Hang Seng
dipped 1.78 per cent and the Straits Times shed 0.3 per cent.
