Colombo - Past seventeen days in the April month alone 34 Sri Lankan
security forces (SF) were killed while 236 SF troopers were seriously
wounded in the battlefronts in Vanni area, according to the Sri Lankan
SF spokesman Udaya Nanayakara. Total of 270 SF troopers were removed
from the battlefronts in the North of Sri Lanka in the clashes between
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the SF within last
seventeen days alone.
February and March, at least 197 and 1510 SF were wounded according to
the account presented to the Sri Lankan parliament by the Sri Lankan
ministers which is significantly higher than the official releases of
the defense ministry figures during the same period and also these
figures did not include the figures of the SF forces losses for the
month of January this year, according to the informed sources in
Colombo.
Sri Lankan government last January unilaterally scrapped the truce
pact which was signed between the LTTE and the GoSL in February 2002
under the Norway mediation. Since then war between LTTE and SF
escalated and violence against civilians also increased to manifolds,
an observer told TNS.
The civil war in Sri Lanka killed at least 80,000 people while half a
million people internally displaced and over million people externally
displaced. At least 5,800 people have been killed in last two years
alone, a right group said.
