GENERATION CHANGE IN RUSSIAN POLITICS
The election of the 40-year-old Dmitry Medvedev as President is
probably the first time such a relatively young man comes to power
here in Russia. A professional lawyer, Medvedev comes from a family of
St. Petersburg intellectuals. As to Vladimir Putin, an independent and
strong politician, the maker of the current system of governance in
Russia, is becoming Prime Minister and the leader of the country=92s
biggest political party. We asked the prominent political analyst Olga
Kryshtanovskaya to say a few words about where the Russian political
system will be heading from now.
I believe there will be two power groups forming up in the coming
months, one led by Medvedev and the other by Putin, Olga says. Dmitry
Medvedev is certain to bring in young blood, simply because, as a
politician, he is still a young man at the start of his career=85 That=92s

However, to make sure intellectuals come to the Kremlin it is
necessary to create an atmosphere of fair competition, which means
that we must get rid of perks, cronyism and other ills of the past.
The bottom line here is to place Russian bureaucrats in a situation
where they will have to prove who is best and the less they are
influenced by their older colleagues, the better. But young managers
could still learn a lot of useful things from these experienced and
politics-savvy politicians of the old school, so it looks like this is
exactly what the Medvedev-Putin tandem will be doing=85
To implement the ambitious socioeconomic goals it has set itself,
Russia will have to radically overhaul the way its economy works
which, in turn, will change the people=92s mentality and lead to the
ultimate transformation of the Russian society. All this meaning that
Russia is now ready for a new generation of leaders, Olga
Kryshtanovskaya said in conclusion.
