The most common word is "strait."

It's much easier than it used to be -- for birds, try sites like

With the Latin names, I've had
little difficulty lately even with obscure flora or fauna.

Fireflies and other creatures that don't exist here are indeed a
problem (the usual dictionary translation of "firefly" is
"j=E2=F2t=E2rpi=F2=F0" ["jantarpins"], but that is more correctly a
glow-wor=
m --
they do not fly). Such similar but quite different beings can cause a
lot of confusion -- I kept waiting for the "j=E2=F2t=E2rpi=F2i" to take
off =
in
my first summer here, to everyone's amusement...
A "hummingbird is a "kolibri."
Re the ****p -- according to the latest re****ts, the first mate is to
blame (for giving the wrong orders to the... "st=FBrmanis"; "helmsman"?
Freeing the vessel will run to a million euros, and I don't think that
includes the participation of (pretty much the entire) Latvian Navy.
