UNB, Panchagarh
The work of a strawberry nursery and research project began here recently
with a view to popularize strawberry cultivation in the district. The
Golden
Seed Farm of the area found that the weather and soil of the district are
favourable for strawberry cultivation and selected Holdhorjot village for
its cultivation.
The farm has installed a strawberry nursery project on three acres of land
at Amarkhana in Sadar upazila.Additional Deputy Commissioner M Manjur
Hasan
Bhuiyan inaugurated the nursery with Prof M Manjur Hossain of Rajshahi
University Botany department in the chair. Prof M Manjur Hossain said he
evolved three varieties of strawberry-RB-1, RB-2 and RB-3 and the RB-3
variety cultivation is highly suitable in the country.
He said, "Strawberry usually grows in the countries where winter prevails
most of the time and our climate is not suitable for the plants. That's
why
we have developed the species that can be grown here." Prices of im****ted
strawberry vary from Tk 900 to Tk 1000 per kg. A farmer can yield 2000 kg
of
strawberry from one bigha of land. "If we sell strawberry even at Tk 100
per
kg, it will help earn Tk 2 lakh from one bigha," said Prof Manjur.
Strawberry saplings can be sown in rows in November and December. The
plant
starts flowering within one month of plantation and fruits can be
collected
till March. Director of Golden Seed Farm Hafizur Rahman said the prospect
of
cultivating strawberry, a value added crop, is bright in the district.
This nursery was installed with a view to popularize strawberry
cultivation
among farmers and supply high quality seeds to the farmers.
