Tiger arrested in India could shed light on T'mannar attack
by Shamindra Ferdinando
Sri Lanka firmly believes that a hardcore LTTE cadre in Indian custody
can shed light on Monday's attack north of Talaimannar carried out by
men on two Indian trawlers.
"There are three possibilities; the attackers are LTTE cadres, Indians
or a mixture of Tigers and their Tamil Nadu sup****ters," an official
said, asserting that interrogation of LTTE cadres now in Indian custody
would definitely help the investigators.
Questioning of Jayakumar (34) alias Gowrishankar, a senior LTTE cadre
arrested at a parking lot of Chennai International Air****t terminal
December 8 last year would be im****tant, Sri Lankan officials said.
Gowrishankar, a resident of Velvettiturai and James, another LTTE
operative in Indian custody had acknowledged that they had been tasked
to procure Indian trawlers.
India had denied Sri Lanka access to the suspects. India also dismissed
Sri Lanka's call for access to nine LTTE cadres arrested on February 13
last year and April 11 last year. Of them, six arrested in April by the
Coast Guard had been allegedly involved in the Kanyakumari massacre late
March last year. Interestingly, they had been tried on a charge of
violating the Indian Pass****t Act and given seven month prison sentences
and that too, set off against the period they had served in the Madurai
prison.
Under interrogation, Gowrishankar led the Chennai city 'Q' branch to
Mallipattinam in the coastal Thanjavur district where police recovered a
large trawler with funds he received from a London-based LTTE operative
identified as Karuppiah. He is believed to be a central figure in the
LTTE arms and equipment procurement ring.
Police had recovered Indian Rs 478,290 from James who under
interrogation admitted that he too wanted to procure a trawler. An
Indian accomplice, 42-year-old Ravikumar is also in custody.
Sri Lankan officials said that Gowrishankar could be aware of the plan
to use Indian trawlers to mount attacks on SLN patrol craft deployed to
curb LTTE sea movements across Gulf of Mannar. Six SLN personnel
perished in Monday's attack which destroyed a small patrol boat. The
only survivor had been brought to Colombo for de-briefing.
"Q' branch, Indian Navy and Coast Guard in 15 separate detections had
arrested 88 Sri Lankans and Indians for allegedly being involved with
the LTTE since January last year to the second week of January this year.
Along with them, authorities recovered aluminium bars (6,000 kgs), metal
rings, high grade neo print rubber, one suicide kit (laced with 3 kgs of
explosives), one T 56 assault rifle, five hand grenades, satellite
phone, 10,155 detonators, adhesives, diesel, credit cards, fake
pass****ts, 21 gelatine sticks, several vehicles and motor cycles, 2500
kgs of potassium chlorate, 2000 kgs of steel balls and 12 tonnes of
steel balls had been found in two separate detections.
Authorities acknowledged that sizeable stocks of urgently needed
supplies had been detected by India. India has also thwarted an attempt
by a Norway based LTTE agent to send equipment needed through Tamil Nadu
but unfortunately had denied Sri Lanka access to suspects due to
domestic political reasons, they said.
