Navy saves lives of 71 foreigners lost in the North Eastern Sea
Sri Lanka Navy sailors today rescued 71 people who were lost in the sea
onboard a wooden trawler, drifting 150 nautical miles off Mullaithivu.
The group of victims are comprised of 50 Myanmar nationals and 21
Bangladesh nationals.
According to the Navy sources, the boat has been drifting since 20th
February as it had met with an engine failure. During this time 20
people, including 17 Myanmar nationals and 3 Bangladesh nationals said
to have died due to starvation and dehydration, the sources said.
Having notified by the fishermen about the presence of the vessel
yesterday (Mar 2), Sri Lanka navy had deployed two of its deep-sea
surveillance units to rescue the victims. Around 7.30 navy vessels have
taken the victims onboard and are presently being taken to the
Trincomalee Harbour.
According to the investigations done so far, it has been revealed that
the broken down vessel had been engaged in trans****ting illegal migrants
from Myanmar and Bangladesh, to Thailand and Malaysia. The vessel had
sailed from Myanmar on Feb 9 with 67 Myanmar nationals and had taken
another 24 Bangladesh nationals onboard while on the way. Following the
engine trouble, the boat had been drifting towards the Island until Sri
Lanka Navy came for its rescue.
Navy said that all the victims are in serious conditions due to
prolonged dehydration and starvation. Navy medical teams are presently
attending to the victims, the sources added.
