Austin police have charged a gas station clerk with ***ually
assaulting a customer after locking her inside the South Austin store
and flipping off the lights.
Amirali Noorji Maknojia, 44, could face up to 20 years in prison if
convicted of the second-degree felony charge.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed Tuesday, a woman told
police that she had been with a friend at Matt's El Rancho restaurant
on South Lamar Boulevard before the Jan. 28 assault.
She told investigators that she stopped for a bottle of water and
cigarettes about 11 p.m. at a Shell station at 2238 S. Lamar Blvd.,
near the intersection of Goodrich Avenue, and that as she was paying
for the items, Maknojia began telling her "how pretty she was and was
trying to kiss her," the affidavit said. Maknojia then grabbed her by
the sweater and kissed her, the affidavit said.
She tried pu****ng him away, the affidavit said, and he then turned off
the lights to the store and locked the doors.
He took the woman to a bathroom in the store and assaulted her, the
affidavit said.
"After a short period of time, there was knocking at the front door,"
the do***ent said. "(A man) was banging on the door telling the clerk
that the store was not supposed to be closed."
After the clerk let the customer in, the woman left the store and
called her boyfriend, police said.
The American-Statesman does not identify ***ual assault victims.
Maknojia could not be reached for comment. He was not in jail Tuesday
evening.
