Dear U Myint Lwin,
Gosh, but it was difficult to get through to NLM today. MRTV was
overwhelmed
with traffic, and the text version was offline for much of the day. But
what
U Thaung Nyunt has to say about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's eligibility for the
2010 elections is mildly encouraging, though I guarantee few international
newspapers will spot it. In plain English:
"U Thaung Nyunt said that the right to stand for election in 2010 was not
a
matter for the Referendum Commission. The responsible body to be
appointed,
the Electoral Commission, would need to examine each case when the
elections
were announced, and it was expected that provision would be made for
persons
concerned to contest any order debarring them from standing for election,
and they would have a right of appeal against any negative decision from
the
lowest to the highest level."
